history & more

Pure Land Kadampa Buddhist Centre was established in 1995 and is currently located in St James, Exeter, within 20 minutes walking distance of the City Centre and close to the University and St James Park train station.

We are home to a small residential community who share a similar wish to make their lives meaningful by finding lasting peace and happiness from within and helping others to do the same.

The Centre is open to the public and has a beautiful meditation room overlooking a sunny back garden providing a place of peace and tranquillity in the heart of the city. Whether you wish to try meditation for the first time, learn about Buddha’s teachings or follow a spiritual path we offer a range of classes and events at the Centre and in other towns in Devon. These include weekly classes and chanted prayers, and regular courses, events, and retreats. The teachings are presented in an accessible manner that can be easily integrated into our modern busy lives. Everyone can benefit from these teachings without exception, and everyone is welcome.

We are a member of the New Kadampa Tradition – International Kadampa Buddhist Union. The Centre is a registered charity (no. 1052954). For more information on the Tradition and lineage of the teachings click here

discover a more meaningful life

Living in a Centre gives a special opportunity to discover the Buddhist way of life.
The Centre has accommodation for five residents; rooms are available to rent on a short or long term basis.
You do not need to be Buddhist but have an interest in meditation or exploring Buddha’s teachings.
You also need to have a wish to enjoy being part of a small community of likeminded people, learning to cherish your fellow house mates, caring for the Centre and helping out.

Geshe Kelsang Gyatso

“Normally we divide the external world into that which we consider to be good or valuable, bad or worthless, or neither. Most of the time these discriminations are incorrect or have little meaning. For example, our habitual way of categorizing people as friends, enemies, and strangers depending on how they make us feel is both incorrect and a great obstacle to developing impartial love for all living beings. Rather than holding so tightly to our discriminations of the external world, it would be much more beneficial if we learned to discriminate between valuable and worthless states of mind.”
